Research investigating frontal‐limbic system dysfunction in autism has gained some prominence in recent years, emanating from three main sources; animal studies, investigations of frontal lobe patients and neuropsychological assessment of individuals with autism. It is suggested that some of the repetitive behaviours associated with autism might represent examples of utilization behaviour. Some preliminary data are presented to support this suggestion. The implications of this account are discussed with respect to the links that are frequently made between obsessive‐compulsive disorder, Tourette's syndrome and autism.
