This article describes the possibilities and limitations of behavioural therapy for patients with chronic skin disease. Attention is firstly paid to the psychosocial consequences of psoriasis and atopic dermatitis and the influence of stress on the course of the dermatoses. Subsequently behavioural therapy methods are described and an evaluation is made of effect studies on this topic. The following approaches are discussed: hypnosis, stress management (biofeedback and relaxation training) and habit reversal. 1
