The relation between parental rearing behaviour and cognitive distortions (according to Beck's theory of depression) in adult life has been examined in a sample of 185 depressed inpatients. Especially such parental rearing factors as rejection, maternal shaming and guilt‐engendering, tolerance, affection and stimulating showed highly significant correlations with the factors de‐pressogenic Information processing, perfectionistic attitudes and self‐esteem depending on the approval of others from the Dysfunctional Attitude Scale (DAS). The results both confirm aspects of cognitively‐oriented diathesis‐stress models and of the integrative vulnerability model by Perris.
