The frontispiece shows the milestones of research on mechanoluminescent materials first documented in 1605. Since 1999, when mechanoluminescence emission was made visible to the naked eye, this field has evolved into a highly interdisciplinary subject by applications in biology, energy storage, and information technology. In the Minireview on page 1209 , F. Wang et al. describe recent developments in the fabrication, characterization, and technological application of mechanoluminescent phosphors doped with lanthanide or transition‐metal ions. Challenges to further development and use of mechanoluminescence are also discussed.
