The frontispiece shows a Eucalyptus tree, the leaves of which contain an oil mainly consisting of a bicyclic terpenoid, 1,8‐cineole, nearly unused as an intermediate in chemical synthesis owing to its stability and symmetrical structure. Nomenclature uncertainties and varied numbering of carbon atoms in the literature have sometimes obscured the development of its chemistry. This Review by Robert Azerad on page 634 ff. reports a unified numeration system and constitutes an exhaustive compilation of the physicochemical characteristics of sixty derivatives, their structural and synthetic studies, biological activities, and biotransformations in microorganisms, plants, and animals such as eucalyptus‐leaf‐eating Australian marsupials.
