Flashpoint: Threshold photoelectron spectra of the transient species C 7 H 6 and C 7 H 5 are recorded using synchrotron radiation. Both species are produced by flash pyrolysis from phthalide. The hitherto unobserved fulvenallenyl radical is identified to be the carrier of the C 7 H 5 signal (see picture). The ionization energies of fulvenallenyl and fulvenallene are determined from the spectra.
