Photosensitized seeding of hydrophobic gold nanoparticles stabilized with strong coordinating thiol ligands can be easily performed using ultraviolet light, a gold salt, and an organic photocatalyst (see picture). This is a clean and fast process (just a few minutes) which takes place at room temperature.
