Controlled spin states: Changes in the spin state of Y@C 82 as a function of the charge transferred to the fullerene cage in solution are studied in detail by using in situ electron spin resonance (ESR) spectroelectrochemistry. Tuning of the spin state of the endohedral fullerene Y@C 82 occurs via the Y@C 82 − monoanion and the Y@C 82 3− trianion.
