Observing a catalyst at work : The first 13 C cross‐polarization (CP)/magic‐angle spinning (MAS) NMR spectroscopic evidence for the existence of surface ethoxy species on acidic zeolite Y is reported. In situ 13 C CP/MAS NMR–UV/Vis spectroscopy was used to investigate the further decomposition of surface ethoxy species on zeolite H‐Y (see picture) to hydrocarbons at elevated reaction temperatures.
