Moving the labels : The dynamics of surface lattice oxygen atoms is demonstrated using 18 O‐labeled MgO and CaO catalysts. The incorporation of 18 O into the products of the pseudo‐Canizzaro reaction under mild conditions (see Figure) illustrates the nucleophilicity of the oxide surfaces and indicates a reaction mechanism involving surface restructuring.
