Standing out from the crowd: The fluorescence intensity increases remarkably when a diarylethene ligand binds with Zn 2+ . By contrast, the fluorescence intensity is quenched when the ligand binds with other metal ions (see graphic) that compete with the zinc ion for binding sites.
