This special issue presents the recent advances in cloud computing and software-defined network, which \were selected out of the significantly extended versions of accepted papers in the Fifth IEEE International Conference on Big Data and Cloud Computing (BDCloud 2015) [1], the Ninth International Conference on Frontier of Computer Science and Technology [2], and a large number of open submissions. The selection has been very rigorous, and only the best papers were selected. Important advances have been provided by Wei et al. [3], by Li et al. [4], by Hong et al. [5], by Xu et al. [6], by Yao et al. [7], by Huang et al. [8], by Zhu et al. [9], and by Tang et al. [10]. These contributions focus on the following.
