We study the variational problemWhere Ψ* is the increasing rearrangement of Ψ. An approximate problem is introduced which involves a variational problem with n free boundaries ( n → ∞). Various estimates are established. In particular, when Ω is convex we show that the solution to the approximate problem is superharmonic and has bounded gradient.
