An hypothesis is presented claiming that gloss derives its commercial and aesthetic values from attracting attention. Gloss appears to mimic motion, which triggers strong responses that are deeply rooted in the biological heritage, shared by humans and animals. Conclusions are translated into a few simple rules for the design of surfaces.
