Unless specimens are illuminated uniformly with respect to both position on the specimens and directon of incidence, reliable visual judments of and measurements of object color difference cannot be made. Devices producing illumination suitable for color difference evaluation can be made using an integrating sphere as and optical component intermediate between the primary source of light and the illuminated area. Properly designed, such sources can be as efficient as the more common sources using imaging optics. Techniques for designing such sources are described.
