A new approach to the calculation of Kubelka‐Munk absorption and scattering coefficients based on linear‐leastsquares techniques is proposed. This algorithm characterizes colorants by determining the coefficients from typical mixtures. Several advantages are gained over traditional methods: Absorption and scattering can be determined without use of primary binary mixtures by using production‐mixture history; colorants are characterized in the same manner in which they are used; and the approach is quite flexible in terms of manipulating the calculation.
