The factors affecting the differences in appearance between colours in original scenes and in their pictures are reviewed. These include the picture's border, its angular magnification, its luminance, the colour of its illuminant, its surround, and the extent to which it is itself perceived as an object. Different criteria of picture evaluation are needed according to the circumstances.
