This article describes a methodology used to enable a meaningful comparison of the colour reproduction characteristics of a pair of colour photographic media, on the basis of an instrumental determination of the colour differences between sets of coloured test surfaces and their photographic reproductions. A figure of merit is proposed which can serve as a measure of the relative colour fidelity of the media being compared. This approach should yield a valid comparison between any two or more media having essentially the same display format and being subject to similar sets of controls and constraints.
