Pd nanocatalysts were synthesized by precisely controlling the nanoparticle distribution on the external and internal surfaces of the mesoporous carbon. Quantitative 3D structural characterization was able to distinguish the fraction of Pd nanoparticles confined inside pores, which could preferentially modify the binding orientation of the reactant in liquid phase hydrogenation of furfural. Pd nanoparticles located inside pores promote the formation of 2‐methyl furan, while Pd particles on the external surface result in a higher yield of furfuryl alcohol and tetrahydrofurfuryl alcohol.
