A study of both the epibranchial and the lateral line placodes in forty‐six embryos of Gymnodactylus kotschyi was carried out with a fairly continuous series of embryos, ranging from the first day of incubation to hatching. The findings were reported: 1 The opthalmic placode of the V, from stage 14 to 23, was found in 16 embryos out of 24 and in 1 embryo of stage 24. 2 The maxillo‐mandibular placode of the V was found in 15 embroys out of 31 between stages 17 and 26. 3 The epibranchial placode of the VII was found in 29 out of 31 embroys between stages 14 and 26.
