The influence of the variety and pH of the fixative upon the Nissl pattern has been studied, together with the action of warm water, acids and Na 2 CO 3 after ordinary fixation. The effect of NH 4 OH is characteristic. The stainability is considerably modified, but through alternating the use of the gallocyanin method and of a new stain, gallamin blue, desribed in the text, the Nissl substance is always stainable. After fixation in alcohol the substance does not stain with purified methylgreen.
