The growing demand for ancillary molecular testing on cytology and small biopsy specimens must be met with systematic and innovative ways to maximize diagnostic yield from limited amounts of tissue. In this issue of Cancer Cytopathology , Ye et al describe their analytic validation of supernatant fluid from centrifuged thyroid fine‐needle aspiration specimens (fluid that generally is discarded during routine processing) as the source of nucleic acid for targeted next‐generation sequencing for cancer‐related mutations.
