The most promising avenue for treating cancers that progress after standard chemotherapy regimens is targeted therapy, in which drugs are chosen to disrupt specific pathways known to be important in disease progression. Significant progress is being made in targeted therapies as we gain understanding of the molecular basis of the cancers we treat. See also pages 3519–28.
