The current study compares the use of radical prostatectomy and external beam radiation therapy in the treatment of patients with prostate carcinoma and concludes that radical prostatectomy is more beneficial than external beam radiation therapy for low‐risk and intermediate‐risk men with this common disease. However, the issue remains a matter of debate between urologic surgeons and radiation oncologists with regard to the treatment of localized prostate carcinoma. See also pages 215–8 and 281–6.
