In this issue of Cancer Cytopathology , the category of atypical squamous cells of undetermined significance (ASCUS) (which has been a source of controversy since its inclusion in the Bethesda Classification system for cervical cytology in 1989) is revisited. Based on the problems associated with the ASCUS category, some have hoped for its elimination. In the referenced article, the authors evaluated such an approach with regard to its effect on the accuracy of the Papanicolaou smear.
