Natural born killers : Nonglycosidic α‐galactosylceramide (α‐GalCer) analogues, with a polyhydroxylated aminocyclohexane moiety as the galactose surrogate, constitute a new class of charged NKT cell agonists. One of these compounds, HS44, promotes in vitro NKT cell expansion in a similar fashion to α‐GalCer but with lower potency, and induces the release of IFNγ and IL‐4 in iNKT cell culture causing a biased Th2 cytokine profile response.
