Biological treatment of phenol solution using the green macroalga Chara sp. is investigated in this study. The findings from batch experiments reveal the ability of Chara to remove phenol from aqueous solution. A central composite design (CCD) is employed for the optimization of the phenol removal process. The effects of the pH of phenol solution, initial concentration of phenol, algal biomass, and temperature on phenol removal from aqueous solution are tested. The correlation coefficient of R 2  = 93% and the adjusted correlation coefficient of R 2 (adj) = 0.87 shows the conformity between the model outcomes and experimental results. The predicted response (phenol removal after 4 h) under optimal conditions is 72.30%, which is close to the experimental result (71.45%). The maximal removal of phenol is achieved at the optimal conditions of pH of 5, initial phenol concentration of 13.5 mg L −1 , algal mass of 1.2 g, and temperature of 30 °C. The results show that Chara alga has the potential for phenol removal from aqueous solution. The results suggest a biodegradation mechanism, but this has not yet been confirmed.
