Data collected during almost 40 years' follow‐up of over 10,000 participants in the Framingham Study and the Framingham Offspring Study are reviewed to highlight the influence of the following factors on the risk for coronary heart disease: systolic blood pressure; lipids (total cholesterol, high‐density‐lipoprotein low‐density‐lipoprotein cholesterol, and triglycerides); cigarette smoking; diabetes mellitus; obesity; and left ventricular hypertrophy.
