A group of 48 patients with essential mild to moderate hypertension were treated with the calcium‐channel blocker diltiazem (90–270 mg/day) for one year. Adequate blood pressure control was achieved in all patients. No tolerance developed during the one‐year treatment period. The drug is almost free from side effects. Very few patients develop fluid retention, which can be controlled by adding a diuretic.
