A new photochromic biindenylidenedione compound bearing two azobenzene units was synthesized and characterized by means of 1 H NMR, 13 C NMR, ESI‐MS and elemental analysis. The photochromic and photo‐induced radical properties were investigated by means of UV‐Vis and electron spin resonance spectroscopy, respectively. The results showed that the title compound exhibited photochromic behavior with good fatigue resistances both in solution and in the solid state.
