A method for estimating the critical temperature ( T b ) of thermal explosion for energetic materials was derived from Semenov's thermal explosion theory and the non‐isothermal kinetic equation d α /d t = A 0 T α f ( α ) based on Harcourt‐Esson's expression using reasonable hypotheses. The final formula is T b = αT e0 /( α −1), which is simple. The onset temperature ( T ei ) can be easily obtained from the non‐isothermal DSC curves, the value of T e0 can from the equation T ei = T e0 + α 1 β 1 + α 1 β i 2 + α 1 β i 3 , the values of α can from the equation: ln β i =ln[ A 0 /( a +1)G( α )+( a +1)ln T i ], and then the value of T b can be calculated. The result obtained with this method coincides completely with the value of T b obtained by Zhang‐Hu‐Xie‐Li's method.
