A novel highly selective fluorescent Zn 2+ chemosensor bearing terpyridyl and naphthalimide was synthesized, which exhibited very obvious fluorescent response to Zn 2+ and was remarkably selective to Zn 2+ than other metal ions such as Zn 2+ , Pb 2+ , Cd 2+ , Cu 2+ , Hg 2+ , Ca 2+ , Mn 2+ , Mg 2+ , Fe 3+ , Co 2+ , Ni 2+ and Ag + .
