Ni/SiO 2 catalysts promoted by alkali metals K and Cs or alkaline earth metals Mg, Ca, Sr and Ba were prepared, characterized by H 2 ‐TPR and XRD, and used for the production of synthesis gas via methane reforming with CO 2 . Though K and Cs promoted Ni catalysts could eliminate coke deposition, the reforming activity of these promoted catalysts was decreased heavily. Mg and Ca promoted Ni/SiO 2 catalysts exhibited excellent coke resistance ability with minor loss of the reforming activity of Ni/SiO 2 . Ba showed poor coke resistance ability and small amount of Sr increased the formation of coke. The possible mechanism of these promoters was discussed.
