β‐(2,3‐Dihydroxybenzoyl)butyric acid ( 1 ), a new natural product, has been synthesized from o ‐vanillin via a seven‐step process with an overall yield of 21.3%. The key reaction step involved in this synthesis was the formation of compound 6 by the condensation between 5 and malonic ester.
