Recently reported results for the behaviour of fluidized beds under extreme conditions of operation are shown to be in good quantitative agreement with the predictions of a long established fluid‐dynamic criterion for the onset of instability of the homogeneously fluidized state. The four sets of experiments relate to fluidization under very high pressure conditions (by supercritical fluids), at very high and very low effective gravitational field strengths, and at very low particle concentrations.
