Previously reported data on the effects of the utilization of coal‐based raw materials within the petrochemical industry indicated a conflict between the objectives of efficient utilization of raw materials and energy in structuring an optimum system. The nature of this conflict was examined more closely by comparing system performances which refer to separate considerations of the conflicting objectives. The multiobjective approach was applied in order to generate compromise system structures and to determine the region in which the preferred compromise solution is to be found.
