Abstract The paper focuses on the pressure drop across stationary and rotating chambers. The non‐dimensional pressure drop has been found to depend solely on a single dimensionless parameter which involves only geometric quantities. The finding is supported by past and present experimental evidence. The similarity relationship for the pressure drop is shown to be true for both types of vortex chambers. Based on the derived relationship and the experimental data, an empirical formula capable of predicting the pressure drop over a wide range of design conditions has been obtained using the least squares method.
