Magic angle spinning 27 Al NMR studies of a γ‐alumina show that the proportion of octahedrally coordinated aluminum ions increases after the adsorption of gaseous chlorine. The relative increase of the octahedrally coordinated aluminum ions is greater at higher temperatures and occurs due to preferential conversion of the tetrahedrally coordinated aluminum ions in the surface.
