Adsorption studies indicate that low concentration and high temperature favour the removal of 1‐butanethiol from kerosene oil by adsorption on red mud. A first order mechanism has been proposed to describe the adsorption in the present system. Equilibrium data at different temperatures fit well in the Langmuir isotherm equation. Thermodynamic parameters for the present system indicate the feasibility of removal of 1‐butanethiol from kerosene oil by adsorption on red mud.
