In this paper investigations of the mode of combustion of coal char in a fluidised bed at temperatures of 973–1173 K are presented. A reactor of 80 mm diameter has been continuously fed with particles of three different size ranges: 0.5–1.0 mm, 1.0–2.0 mm and 2.0–3.0 mm. Carbon loadings were in the range 20–60%. It has been shown that the particles of coal and of partially devolatilized char combust in the form of a shrinking sphere.
