The kinetics of methanation are presented from the point of view of reactions on heteroenergetic catalyst surfaces. Using a general adsorption isotherm for such surfaces developed by Crickmore and Wojciechowski, we have derived kinetic rate expressions which describe the rapid drop in activity observed by Dalmon and Martin at low pressures as well as the form of the rate expression proposed by Bell at higher pressures.
