A probe and measuring system for determing local values of particle velocity in liquid‐solids mixtures has been constructed and tested. The probe uses the cross‐correlation principle. Its performance was found to depend upon the scale of the concentration fluctuations which occur in the flow. Probe geometry was also found to be of importance. Volumetric flowrate measurements indicated that an accuracy of 3% could be achieved. The probe should be of value in the study of two‐phase flows.
