Segregation of solid materials, differing in density, was detected at the surface of the annulus of a spouted bed when a baffle, preventing mixing with solids from the fountain, was placed above an overflow pipe. Concentrations higher than 90% by volume in the light material could be obtained in the continuous discharge stream from a well mixed bed having an overall light‐solids concentration as low as 3%. The gas velocity in the annulus, exceeding the minimum fluidization velocity of the light component, was shown to be the mechanistic explanation of the phenomenon.
