Knowledge of falling film flow and heat transfer characteristics on horizontal tubes is required in the assessment of certain CANDU reactor accident sequences for those CANDU reactors which use moderator dump as one of the shut‐down mechanisms. In these reactors, subsequent cooling of the calandria tubes is provided by falling films produced by sprays. This paper describes an analysis of falling film flow and heat transfer characteristics on horizontal tubes using integral methods. The application of the results to an assessment of the stability of the films on the calandria tubes following a loss‐of‐coolant accident with impaired emergency coolant injection flow is discussed.
