A novel technique of obtaining fundamental kinetic data for complex chemical reactions on a decaying catalyst is described. The technique, based on the use of “Optimum Performance Envelopes” and initial selectivities, it used to determine the initial rate constants for the formation of all known primary prodiicts in the conversion of cnmene on Lay. From these data, the corresponding activation energies and frequency factors are estimated. Using the above procedures to study the effects of diffusion on this reaction it has been shown that the effect of changing particle size is more complex than that predicted by existing theories of catalyst diffusion.
