Abstract An experimental study of steam vapour bubble collapse in water suddenly pressurized is performed by use of high speed cinematography. Bubbles with initial radii ranging from 0.14 cm to 1 cm are presented. The pressure difference ranges from 21.7 to 80.8 kPa and the corresponding degrees of subcooling are 6.6°C to 40.9°C. The experimental data are compared with various theories. Heat transfer between the bubble and the surrounding liquid is underestimated while liquid inertia is more accurately evaluated. This underestimation apparently caused by the distortion of rising bubbles has a great effect on the large bubbles and on low subcooled cases.
