Even though photochromic flow visualization has been applied to a large range of flow configurations, no analytical study has been made indicating the effects of turbulence fluctuations on the precision of velocity and turbulence data measured by means of the technique. Because of the quick break up and dispersion of photochromic traces by turbulent eddies in the flow it is useful to know a priori the number of observations from which velocity and turbulence data can be determined with a prefixed precision. The paper presents equations and figures from which this and other useful information may be derived. low Reynolds number and by Seeley et al (5) in their
