Experimental results on the reduction of compacted pellets of the chlorides of cobalt and nickel are reported. The kinetics of the processes are considered in the light of the chloride vaporization mechanism previously proposed to account for the reduction of ferrous and chromous chlorides. Although all these reduction processes are superficially similar, substantial differences in reaction topography have been observed. These differences are attributed to the wide range of vapour pressure displayed by the various metal chlorides over the range of experimental conditions employed. Possible technical exploitation of these reactions is briefly discussed.
