It is shown by means of two performance criteria that a mixer‐settler combination can successfully be used as a direct contact heat transfer device between two immiscible liquids. This combination was operated under steady‐state conditions. The two criteria were a heat transfer efficiency and an overall volumetric heat transfer coefficient. The experimental results show a considerable increase in efficiency and in the overall coefficient with increasing rotational speed of the agitator. These two criteria are also influenced by the ratio of heat flow rates of the two liquids; one particular value of this ratio results in a minimum heat transfer efficiency; at another value the volumetric coefficient passes through a maximum.
