The literature on applications of dynamic programming in the chemical processing industries is quite comprehensive. However, only a few studies have been conducted in which the strategy of dynamic programming has been compared with efficient optimization algorithms not utilizing the structural properties of the optimization problem in question. The purpose of this short note is to report on the results of such a comparative study and to suggest some general guidelines as to the proper choice of optimization strategy when dealing with serial processing systems in the chemical industry.
